On Saturday Boeheim completed his 41st season at the helm of Syracuse. He'll coach at least two more seasons.

Syracuse has extended Jim Boeheim’s contract past his previously planned retirement date of after the 2017-18 season, SU announced in a release Sunday night.

The release doesn’t specify a specific end date for Boeheim’s contract extension.

“Syracuse moved promptly to maintain stability in its program by negotiating the new deal with Boeheim, who had planned to step down following the conclusion of the next season,” the release said.

The announcement came after Mike Hopkins took the head coaching job at the University of Washington following 22 years as an SU assistant coach. Hopkins was named the SU head coach-designate by Chancellor Kent Syverud on June 25, 2015.

“Mike accepting the position at Washington has put us in a unique position,” SU Director of Athletics John Wildhack said. “The circumstances are different now than they were when he was named head-coach-in-waiting.”

Assistant coach Adrian Autry was promoted to associate head coach and assistant coach Gerry McNamara will stay on Syracuse’s staff. There is still one assistant coach vacancy left by Hopkins’ departure.

“Mike received a great opportunity and we thank him and wish him the best,” Boeheim said in the release. “I’m happy to stay on to help the program and to continue the staff’s devotion to success.”

Syracuse just concluded arguably its worst season under Boeheim, bowing out of the National Invitation Tournament to Mississippi in the second round on Saturday. The Orange finished 19-15, its most losses in Boeheim’s 41 years as head coach, and missed out on the NCAA Tournament after losing five games to teams that finished outside of the RPI Top 100.
